These pieces were “smoked” in a brick pit to achieve the organic coloring on the pots.  The pots were first fired to a low temperature so they remained pourous, allowing them to “recieve” the carbon in the smoke.  This means they are not water-tight and should be treated with care as they are more fragile than other kinds of pottery.
