Exploring Faith Through Creative Arts with Rev. Amy A. BruchMinister of Liturgical Arts, UCC Norwell, MA

This blog offers a glimpse into the classes I offer to churches and other groups in the Boston area. Each class is tailored to the needs and goals of the group with beautiful materials and supplies offered to create pieces for worship, fellowship and prayer.

I believe that exploring our creative spirit is one more way to learn about our faith and who we are as people of God. Making things by hand can be relaxing, fun and challenging. But more important than the things we make is who we are as we make them.

The Art of Prayer Workshop: Come and explore the creative process as a form of prayer. Most of the items we use in our daily lives are no longer made by hand. We rely on machines to create the plates on which we eat, the clothes we wear, and the products we use as we go about our days. In this workshop let your hands, your heart and your mind work together as you experiment, problem solve and stretch your imagination by creating simple clay vessels. This prayerful activity will connect you to the earth in unexpected ways. Your hands are the best tools you possess and can teach you more than you might hope or imagine.

These are pictures of the work created on May 5th in the workshop.

The photos you see here were taken in the Eden Vale Ballroom which served as the central gathering place for presentations and worship during the conference. The “landscapes” represented are: Desert, Mountain, Plains, Forest and Water. These stations were used for prayer, communion, blessing with water and hand-washing.

In preparation for an upcoming retreat on the theme of “Amazing Grace”, a group of women in this church gathered to create tiles and vessels to be used as aids in prayer and reflection. Exploring color and texture, they had a great time enjoying each other’s company and practicing the gift of creativity given to each of us by God’s grace.
